Company Overview
Yaqumo is a quantum computing startup founded on research originating from the Takahashi Laboratory at Kyoto University and the Omori Laboratory at the Institute for Molecular Science (IMS).
Our core technology is based on neutral-atom quantum computing, a promising architecture known for its scalability to large numbers of qubits. While neutral-atom systems offer significant advantages in scalability, challenges remain in areas such as fault tolerance and computational performance. Yaqumo combines the expertise of both research groups to address these challenges.
In 2025, the company secured approximately JPY 700 million in funding and was selected for a major NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) program. We are currently developing ytterbium-based quantum gates, control systems, and quantum error correction technologies, with the goal of delivering a prototype fault-tolerant quantum computer by FY2027.
Our long-term vision is to bring neutral-atom quantum computing into practical use and tackle societal challenges that are beyond the capabilities of conventional computing.

Job Summary
Yaqumo is seeking a researcher with a background in quantum error correction, able to perform numerical simulations for analysing and evaluating the performance of schemes for fault-tolerance on neutral atom quantum computers. The potential of quantum computers relies upon large-scale fault-tolerant devices and this role will focus on evaluating fault-tolerant methods and their applicability to hardware, including the development and implementation of practical decoders.
This role involves determining which quantum error correction codes, decoders and fault-tolerant strategies are best suited for neutral atom hardware by quantifying logical performance under experimental constraints. This includes collaboration with Engineering teams to develop high-performance decoders and implement them in hardware. We are looking for candidates to actively engage in quantum error correction research and contribute to the wider research community through publication, while also engaging with real devices in collaboration with our Control Systems, Engineering and Software teams to realise the potential of fault-tolerant neutral atom quantum computers.
Responsibilities
- Perform numerical simulations to assess and compare the performance of state-of-the-art designs for quantum architectures.
- Develop practical decoders and work together with other teams to implement them in hardware, including real-time or low-latency decoding.
- Develop and maintain software tools for the performance analysis of fault-tolerant protocols.
- Implement quantum error correction on neutral atom hardware.
Required Qualifications
- PhD or equivalent in Quantum Information, Physics, Computer Science or Mathematics.
- Experience programming in Python, Rust, Julia, C++ or similar languages, and familiarity with collaborative programming using Git version control.
- Experience using and/or contributing to quantum software tools such as Stim, sinter, PyMatching, and other performance analysis tools used by the QEC community.
- Experience with numerically simulating and analysing the performance of error correction protocols under circuit-level noise.
- Experience with decoding schemes such as BP, MWPM, union-find, tensor-network, or neural decoders.
- Ability to work alongside and collaborate with people across the diverse disciplines of engineering, experimental physics and software.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience collaborating with experimental teams.
- Experience in developing high-performance software for hardware.
- Experience applying machine learning for quantum information, such as decoding, calibration or noise modelling.
Hiring Process
Application Review → First Interview → Second Interview → Final Interview
- Depending on the position, candidates may be asked to complete a technical assignment after the first interview.
- We place a strong emphasis on mutual understanding throughout the hiring process. Depending on the role and evaluation process, additional interviews, informal meetings with team members, or offer discussions may be arranged.
